We can utilize the Internet not only to gain various pieces of information and perform electronic communication but also to work with our bank account, do shopping, access company information systems, etc. With Internet development, the need to use services of this network anywhere and anytime is rising. Such a use was impossible for a long time because of the usual need for quite bulky equipment.
The situation is changing drastically nowadays, however, since there are mobile phones supporting the WAP protocol (Wireles Application Protocol) on the market. With a mobile phone equipped with this technology, we can make use of services that we know from the Internet wherever the mobile network signal coverage is available. Virtually all the main producers now put phones supporting services based on WAP technology on the market.
With the WAP protocol, it is possible to utilize services similar to those we know from the Internet - have access to e-mail, bank accounts, the latest news and information, do shopping, etc. However, you have to keep in mind the limitations resulting from the small size of displays mobile phones are equipped with. That is why it is not possible to view common Web pages with services using the WAP protocol. Services intended for mobile phones with the WAP protocol have to be created in a special language called WML. Pages programmed in this language usually contain minimal volumes of graphics because their briefness, clearness, and updatedness are preferred.
A great advantage of WAP-based services is their instant availability without the need to own a personal computer. All you need is a modern mobile phone. The assumption is that the number of people using their mobile phones to access information available in the Internet will rise rapidly in the next few years.
